Government Exposed by Wheeler Report

“The Wheeler report has exposed the Howard Government’s uncoordinated and inadequate approach to airport security”, the Federal Member for Kingsford Smith, Peter Garrett, said today.
“One very important aspect that the report highlights is the fact that there is a lack of coordination between state police and federal police. For Labor, this fact has been evident since September 11, 2001.”
“It is timely that the government will now finally appoint a police commander and joint crime fighting team to Australia’s most important airport, Sydney Airport. For too long the local area commands have had to stretch their resources to provide an adequate police presence.”
“The Wheeler report means the government must move immediately to make important changes, many of which Kim Beazley put forward almost 4 years ago. The Minister should now fulfil his promise of implementing fully Sir John’s recommendations.”
